9 recent dental education updates

From funding to establish a dental school to research and scholarship grants, here are nine dental education updates Becker’s has reported on since Jan. 24:

1. Dr. Hacer Aksel, a clinical assistant professor of periodontics and endodontics at the University of Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine, received a grant to study vital pulp therapy. 

2. Angelo Mariotti, DDS, PhD, was named dean of the Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Dentistry.

3. Henry Cherrick, DDS, an oral pathology leader who served as dean of two dental schools, died Jan. 24 at the age of 84. 

4. Howard Howell, DDS, is retiring from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine after serving the school for more than 45 years. 

5. Dentsply Sirona and the National Dental Association expanded their partnership to promote diversity and inclusion in dental education.

6. The Pacific Dental Services Foundation awarded scholarships totaling $65,000 to dental assisting students. 

7. Rootstown-based Northeast Ohio Medical University received $2 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for its upcoming dental school.

8. The UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry received a $9.8 million grant to study new painkiller medicines that could be alternatives to opioids.

9. Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee received a $1 million gift from the We Energies Foundation to increase scholarship funding and enhance its clinics.
