Dentists need a DEA registration if they prescribe controlled substances. The DEA says the registration fee, which has not been increased since 2012, is going up “to recover the costs of its Diversion Control Program.”

Dentists who do not want to renew their DEA prescribing registrations should check with their dental plans beforehand, as some require such registrations during the credentialing process.
