Dental innovation continues: 10 big updates to know

Here are 10 dental industry “firsts” Becker’s has reported on so far this year:

1. The University of the Pacific will become the first dental school in the U.S. to implement PDS Health’s dental-optimized instance of Epic across medical, dental and ambulatory surgery center settings.

2. Milwaukee-based Marquette School of Dentistry received a $2 million gift to establish its first endowed directorship.

3. Michigan recently licensed its first dental therapist in an effort to improve dental care access in the state.

4. Big Rapids, Mich.-based Ferris State University appointed Deborah Brown, DMD, to lead the development and launch of the state’s first dental therapy program.

5. Yeshiva University will open the first new dental school in New York City in more than a century.

6. The Community College of Baltimore County in Maryland opened the first virtual reality lab for dental hygiene students in the U.S.

7. Dentsply Sirona and Siemens Healthineers received FDA clearance for the first-of-its-kind dental-dedicated MRI in the U.S.

8. Dental supply company Henry Schein opened its first training facility for dental-medical integration in Southlake, Texas. 

9. Newark, N.J.-based Rutgers School of Dental Medicine is the first dental school in the U.S. to join the International Federation of Dental Schools and Faculties.

10. The University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry added the department of population oral health, its first new department in more than 30 years.
