In a letter to state Rep. Ron Stephens, dentists said that the causes of Georgia’s dental desserts are dental student debt, the poor distribution of dentists across the state and dental faculty shortages.
In January 2024, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp allocated $178 million of the state’s budget for a new dental school at the Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus in Savannah.
The group of dentists say that the funds could have been utilized better to fix Georgia’s current challenges in the dental industry rather than building a new dental school, the report said.
