Global dental group calls for integrated EHRs

The FDI World Dental Federation urged health systems to include oral health indicators in EHRs.

The eight key indicators that the organization wants to see integrated are periodontal disease, caries, oral cancer screenings, oral health status, medical devices and implants information, prescription data, allergy information and radiographic imaging, according to an April 25 news release from the American Dental Association.

Current challenges to adding dental and oral health information to EHRs include standardization, stakeholder engagement, data and security, cost and international coordination.

By integrating dental and medical records, health systems could improve efficiency, reduce administrative burdens and enhance patient outcomes, the release said.
