A Michigan dentist was recently indicted for allegedly running a criminal enterprise and committing Medicaid fraud.
Demetra Kazanis, DDS, was charged with one count of conducting a criminal enterprise, which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $100,000. She was also charged with 42 counts of Medicaid fraud, with each count being punishable by up to four years in prison and/or a fine of up to $50,000, according to a May 28 news release.
The Michigan Department of Attorney General accused Dr. Kazanis of billing Medicaid for fillings that were either not performed or were performed as less invasive treatments that did not require drilling into patients’ teeth or the use of anesthesia.
Dr. Kazanis was granted a $50,000 personal recognizance bond. She is scheduled to appear in court June 5 for a probable cause conference.
