A dentist in Charlotte, N.C., has surrendered his sedation permit after failing to address safety concerns or fix violations related to sedation.
William Linger, DDS, is not permitted to administer any level of sedation to patients, supervise a certified registered nurse anesthetist or any other person administering sedation, according to documents from the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners.
In 2022, the board entered into a consent order with Dr. Linger that restricted his sedation permit until he met certain conditions, including using another sedation provider, completing a remedial course and having a sedation practice monitor.
Dr. Linger petitioned the board to have the monitor requirement removed in 2024. A board investigator found there were similar issues that led to the 2022 consent order.
While treating and administering sedation to patients during the probationary period, Dr. Linger violated the terms of the consent order and the standard of care.
Dr. Linger can apply for a sedation permit in the future; he must provide evidence that he has met all the requirements, the documents said.
