The first round of refund checks has been sent out to former patients of a now-closed dental practice in Woodbury, Minn.
Woodbury Dental Arts, led by Marko Kamel, DDS, closed in March 2024 after the practice “ran out of money,” leaving patients in the dark about their treatment. The Minnesota Board of Dentistry suspended Dr. Kamel’s dental license, and he is not authorized to practice in the state.
The Minnesota Office of the Attorney General issued 76 refund checks totaling $1,047,210 and has received more than 340 claims related to the practice closure, according to a May 1 news release from the office.
The funds were drawn from the newly created Consumer Protection Restitution Account, which will reimburse patients for services that they paid for in advance but never received from Woodbury Dental Arts.
In November 2025, the Minnesota Office of the Attorney General reached a settlement with the Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee of the practice. As of March, state officials estimate that nearly $5 million in restitution will be paid to the practice’s former patients.
