I. Stephen Brown, DDS, a Philadelphia periodontist known for his pioneering work in dental implants, died July 20 at the age of 86, the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent reported Aug. 13.
Dr. Brown practiced for five decades in Center City and taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University and Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital. He was among the first dentists in Philadelphia to adopt modern dental implant techniques associated with Swedish researcher Per-Ingvar Brånemark, and also explored the use of lasers in treating periodontal disease before the technology became widely accepted.
He retired from private practice in 2022 but continued teaching dental residents at Einstein. The hospital’s annual residents’ implant day was named in his honor.
