The University of Iowa College of Dentistry is seeking permission from the Iowa Board of Regents for an $8.5 million to $10.5 million expansion of its research laboratory space.
The university’s Dental Science Building, which has about 13,500 square feet of lab space, is operating at nearly maximum capacity. The lab space was last renovated in 2011, according to a Sept. 9 news release from the University of Iowa.
The dental school has increased its external research funding from $4.6 million in 2020 to $11.3 million in 2026. With its wet-lab space at capacity, the school has fewer opportunities to recruit new research-intensive faculty or create new research programs.
The proposed expansion would increase research space by about 80%, providing capacity for at least two additional research-intensive faculty members.
The project would be funded by donors, College of Dentistry operating funds and central university funds, the release said.
