University of Pikeville selects new location for upcoming dental school

The University of Pikeville (Ky.) has switched the location of its upcoming dental school.

The university previously purchased a building from Appalachian Newspapers in 2023 to house the Tanner College of Dental Medicine, but the school will now construct a new site near its Health Professions Education Building, according to a May 31 news release.

The university said it decided with the help of architects and engineers that constructing a new building is more feasible than attempting a partial demolition and remodeling of the newspaper building.

The University of Pikeville still needs accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation for the dental school, but it plans to welcome its first cohort of predoctoral dental students in June 2026. Jill Keaton, DMD, was appointed dean in November.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
