The Virginia Board of Dentistry has denied a request to reinstate the license of a dentist who was convicted of taking part in an opioid fraud scheme, CBS affiliate WTKR reported March 5.

Gary Hartman, DDS, was accused of leading a scheme to prescribe opioid pills for his personal use and the use of co-conspirators between 2014 and 2018. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute medically unnecessary oxycodone pills and was sentenced to 100 months in prison. He served four years in prison, with the rest of his sentence spent under home confinement. The state dental board revoked his license in 2019, and Dr. Hartman filed for reinstatement in December 2024.

Dr. Hartman maintained his commitment to sobriety with the board. His attorney shared that Dr. Hartman participated in drug abuse recovery programs while in prison and has passed all drug screenings for the past three years. However, the board chose to deny him license reinstatement.

Dr. Hartman is able to appeal the board’s decision.
