Dentists No. 1 opioid provider to younger patients in Detroit: 5 things to know

Delta Dental of Michigan is partnering with other local healthcare organizations to reduce the use of opioids in Detroit.

Here are five things to know.

1. The Detroit Health Department, Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority, Greater Detroit Area Health Council and Young Connection are partnering with Delta Dental to reduce opioid dependency.

2. Delta Dental is urging Detroit residents to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday.

3. The urge to combat the opioid epidemic follows an American Dental Associations survey that found dentists were the most common healthcare provider to prescribe opioids to patients ages 11 to 18 years old.

4. Delta Dental is also funding 600 Deterra drug disposal bags. The bags are designed to deactivate and dissolve opioids for safe disposal.

5. The are 28 red drug take-back boxes located across Wayne County for community members to drop off excess medications.
