Dental service organizations continue to dominate the industry, with some companies supporting close to 1,000 practices. Below is a list of 25 DSOs to know.

42 North Dental (Waltham, Mass.). Formerly known as Gentle Dental Partners until 2018, 42 North Dental provides business and administrative support to 58 practices, representing 15 practice brands, across four New England states. The dental service organization was created by Ronald Weissman, DDS, and Samuel Shames, DDS, in 1980, when the two dentists began an advertising cooperative with other area dentists. In 2007, the official DSO was formed, and by 2012, 42 North Dental began moving across state lines.

Affordable Care (Morrisville, N.C.). Affordable Care is led by Gene Kirster, who joined the dental service organization in 2017 after spending 10 years as the CEO and president of healthcare supply chain company ROi. Dentists who are members of Affordable Care combined have treated more than 7 million patients. The dental service organization, which has more than 320 practices in its network, brands itself as Affordable Dentures & Implants as well as DDS Dentures + Implant Solutions. Additionally, all Affordable Care practices feature on-site dental laboratories, for same day dental services.

Allied Dental (Toms River, N.J.). Allied Dental has been growing for the past 40 years. The dental service organization helps individual dentists find the perfect location for their practice and generate patient referrals. Allied Dental does not limit itself to general practitioners; specialty dentists can also become affiliated with the DSO. Additionally, Allied Dental offers dentists the chance to attend Allied University, quarterly continuing education courses that are designed to update providers on tools, treatments, scientific research and business practices.

Aspen Dental Management (East Syracuse, N.Y.). With more than 750-branded offices in 39 states, Aspen Dental is one of the largest dental service organizations in the country. Aspen Dental supports thousands of dentists who treated nearly 1.8 million patients in 2018. Last year, the DSO partnered with Walgreens to offer in-store dental services to Walgreens customers. To support its continued expansion, Aspen Dental opened a Midwest headquarters in Chicago in February 2019, which comes equipped with virtual training studios.

Benevis (Marietta, Ga.). Originally named NCDR, Benevis was founded in 2002 to provide non-clinical support services to dentist offices in Georgia. The dental service organization underwent a name change to Benevis in 2014. Since inception, Benevis has made various strategic investments to grow, including the 2010 acquisition of DPMS, another DSO. The DSO also developed its own practice management system to support large dental groups, known as Boomerang. Today, Benevis supports more than 150 practices across the U.S.

Bright Side Dental and Orthodontics (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Abraham Gershonowicz, DDS, founded Bright Side Dental & Orthodontics in 1978 and still serves as CEO today. The dental service organization is solely located in Michigan with nine practices. Bright Side Dental and Orthodontics is associated with the American Dental Association and Michigan Dental Association. Each dental office comes equipped with intraoral cameras, laser cavity detection tools and digital X-ray machines.

ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers (Greenwood Village, Colo.). ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers are staffed exclusively with implant specialists, who can replace a single tooth to full upper arches. The dental service organization was founded in 2005, and today ClearChoice comprises 51 dental implant centers across the nation, with the network growing annually. Since inception, ClearChoice Dental Implants Centers have treated more than 50,000 patients.

Cordental Group (Cincinnati). Cordental Group is among the dental service organizations that are backed by a private equity group. Today, the DSO supports practices within the Mid-Atlantic, Midwestern and Southeastern U.S. In May this year, Cordental further established itself in the Midwest by acquiring two private practices in St. Louis. With the two acquisitions, Cordental supports five practices in the St. Louis area. Dana Soper serves as Cordental’s CEO. She co-founded the DSO after selling a home infusion company in 2013.

DecisionOne Dental Partners (Schaumburg, Ill.). DecisionOne Dental Partners gained the attention of fellow dental service organization Smile Brands in January. Smile Brands made an investment in DecisionOne Dental Partners to support the Illinois-based DSO's growth and future acquisitions in the Chicago area. DecisionOne Dental Partners was founded in 2011 by brothers AJ Acierno, DDS, and Mike Acierno, DDS. Today, the DSO has grown from two practices to 27. The Chicago Tribune ranked the DSO as the No. 1 Top Workplace in Illinois for mid-sized businesses in the dental industry.

Dental Associates (Milwaukee). Dental Associates is a nationally accredited dental organization through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. The dental group has also received an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and has been recognized by Press Ganey for its patient satisfaction scores. Started by a single dentist, Thomas Manos, DDS, Dental Associates today comprises 14 practices throughout Wisconsin. Dental Associates employees more than 800 people who treat thousands of patients annually.

Dental Care Alliance (Sarasota, Fla.). This Florida-based dental service organization was established in 1991 by Steven Matzkin, DDS. Today, Dental Care Alliance is affiliated with more than 650 dentists who practice at more than 300 affiliated practices across 19 states, making it one of the largest DSOs in the country. Some of Dental Care Alliance’s affiliated brands are Baystate Dental, Dental One Associates and Garden State Dental of New Jersey. In March, Dental Care Alliance added Colorado Springs (Colo.) Oral Surgery to its network.

Dental365 (New Hyde Park, N.Y.). Dental365 is among the dental service organizations expanding on the East Coast. The DSO is affiliated with 35 practices throughout the New York City metropolitan area. In May, Dental365 signed a financing deal with healthcare lending company White Oak Healthcare Finance. With the financing, Dental365 plans to expand more rapidly. Additionally, Dental365 was named the official dental partner of the New York Yankees in April, which includes providing preventative care, cosmetic dentistry and oral surgical procedures to team members.

Great Expressions Dental Centers (Southfield, Mich.). Like many dental service organizations that have been acquired by private equity firms, Great Expressions Dental Centers was acquired by Atlanta-based private equity firm Roark in September 2016. At that time, Great Expressions Dental supported 269 affiliated practices in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas and Virginia. Today, the DSO is affiliated with more than 300 practices, 500 dentists and 450 hygienists. Great Expressions has been awarded the Summit Compliance Award from Mesa Labs for its organizationwide commitment to infection control.

Heartland Dental (Effingham, Ill.). Heartland Dental is among the largest dental service organizations in the country with more than 900 affiliated practices. The DSO crossed the 900-practice threshold in December 2018. Along with its practices, Heartland Dental is affiliated with 1,400 dentists and 11,000 team members. Heartland Dental-supported practices can be found in 37 states. In 2018, Heartland Dental expanded its reach into Oregon, North Carolina and Washington. Additionally in 2018, Heartland Dental opened a nonclinical support hub in Indianapolis for administrative services. The DSO was also acquired that year by KKR, a global investment firm.

Hero Practice Services (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Hero Practice Services was founded in 2006 to support dentists and other physicians who provide dental, orthodontic and vision care to children ages 6 months through 20 years. In 2008, the dental service organization expanded to include orthodontic services at various practices. Then in 2009, Hero Practice Services added in-house vision labs to the practices. When Hero Practice Services first looked to expand in 2007, it branched out to Wichita, Kan. Today, the dental service organization has four locations on the East Coast and six de novo practices in Colorado and Kansas. With its continued success in 2015, Hero Dental Practice was acquired by private equity firm Silver Oak Services Partners.

Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.). Although Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners is a newer dental service organization, founded in 2016, the company made waves in January by acquiring Denver-based Birner Dental Management Services for nearly $40 million. Per the acquisition, Birner Dental was rebranded as Rocky Mountain Dental Services under Mid-Atlantic Dental Partner. With the Birner Dental acquisition, Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners also acquired Perfect Teeth, a group of dental offices that was branded under Birner. Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners was able to expand into Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona.

Midwest Dental (Mondovi, Wis.). Midwest Dental, led by CEO Steve Spellman and Chief Dental Officer Elizabeth Rydell, DDS, participates in Give Kids a Smile, a charity event sponsored by the American Dental Association Foundation, which provides patients free care. Additionally, Midwest Dental practices offer free oral screenings in April to raise awareness to the 43,000 Americans diagnosed with oral or throat cancer annually. Today, Midwest Dental has offices in 17 states, including Illinois, Kansas, Pennsylvania and New Mexico.

Onsite Dental (Aliso Viejo, Calif.). Onsite Dental operates with three different delivery models: fixed, mobile and popup. Its fixed practices follow a traditional dental office model. The dental service organization has a mobile dental practice that travels to various locations across the country, and its popup model is focused on bringing dental care to existing medical clinics. Onsite Dental has more than 230,000 staff members. In February 2018, the DSO secured $20 million in funding from equity investment firm Norwest Venture Partners to expand its workplace-based oral health services.

OrthoDent (Bee Cave, Texas). In 2012, two dentists founded OrthoDent to bring dental care access to underserved communities. Today, while supporting practices across Texas, OrthoDent is still focused on local communities. The dental service organization offers affiliated practices billing, information technology, human resource and financial services. Additionally, OrthoDent has a detailed acquisition and transition process for dentists and orthodontists looking to become affiliated with the DSO. OrthoDent also helps dentists and practices with appropriate credentialing.

Pacific Dental Services (Irvine, Calif.). Pacific Dental Services was founded in 1994 with its first supported dental practice in Costa Mesa, Calif. By 1997, the dental service organization had grown to support nearly 20 practices. Today, Pacific Dental Services is affiliated with more than 700 dental offices in 20 states. The DSO expects to add more than 80 supported offices annually. In May, Pacific Dental Services expanded in Ohio with a practice in Cincinnati. The company has plans to open three other supported offices in the area. Along with its rapid growth, Pacific Dental Services has been on the Inc. 5,000 list.

Rock Dental Brands (Little Rock, Ark.). Rock Dental Brands was founded in 2016 by two dentists. Today, the dental service organization provides practice management services to four affiliated dental groups. In June 2018, Rock Dental Brands acquired Apex Dental, a fellow Little Rock dental group with six practices. With the Apex Dental acquisition, Rock Dental Brands manages nearly 600 employees at 74 dental clinics throughout Arkansas, Missouri and West Virginia. In January 2019, Rock Dental Brands selected a new CFO, Jim Myers, as the DSO continues its expansion efforts.

Signature Dental Partners (Phoenix, Ariz.). Signature Dental Partners was established in 2017 by Chet Jenkins, DDS, who had a vision to increase business and purchasing power, reduce overhead and reinvigorate dental staff. Today, Signature Dental Partners is affiliated with more than 25 practices across Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. Beyond providing dentists with the necessary administrative tools to successfully run a practice, Signature Dental Partners helps practices recruit new employees. The DSO's online careers portal allows dentists to post jobs that they need filled within their specific practice.

Smile Brands (Irvine. Calif.). Smile Brands, which originally was named Bright Now Dental, was founded in 1998 by a management team that includes the dental service organization’s current CEO Steve Bilt and CFO Brad Schmidt. Following the acquisitions of Monarch Dental Corp. and Castle Dental Centers, the DSO renamed to Smile Brands in 2009. Today, Smile Brands supports around 400 practices in 16 states. The DSO expanded into Nevada in April 2018 partnering with a seven-practice dental group. A few of the brands under Smile Brands include Newport Dental, OneSmile Dental and Carmel Plaza Dental. In January, Smile Brands was honored as one of the 2019 Best Places to Work in Healthcare by Glassdoor.

Southern Dental Alliance (Kennesaw, Ga.). Southern Dental Alliance supports 30-plus practices in Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina. The dental service organization operates under five brands: Carolina Dental Alliance, Children’s Dental Center, South Carolina Orthodontics Group, Vital Smiles Georgia and Zoo Crew Pediatric Dentistry. Southern Dental Alliance provides affiliated dental practices with information technology support, Spanish translation and facility support. In September 2017, New York-based private equity investment firm Pouschine Cook Capital purchased Southern Dental Alliance.

United Dental Partners (Chicago). In 2014, pediatric dentist Scott Goldman, DDS, and orthodontist Louis Whitesman, DDS, merged their four combined practices to form WhiteGold Dental Partners. Since then, the dental service organization has been renamed to United Dental Partners and has grown to 28 de novo and affiliated practices throughout Illinois and Indiana. Some of the practice brands under United Dental Partners include Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, Westgate Implant and Oral Surgery Center and Chicago Dental Professionals. United Dental Partners has practices focused on general dentistry, orthodontia and oral surgery.
