5 things to know about Heartland Dental and the DSO’s expansion

Effingham, Ill.-based Heartland Dental was founded in 1997 by Rick Workman, DMD, after he opened two dental offices in Effingham. Since then, the dental service organization has grown into one of the largest DSOs in the nation.

Here are five things to know about Heartland Dental:

1. In December 2018, Heartland Dental crossed the threshold of supporting 900 dental offices. In 2018 alone, Heartland Dental affiliated with more than 100 new dental offices.

2. Heartland Dental is present in 37 states. In 2018, the DSO added locations in Oregon, North Carolina and Washington.

3. Combined, Heartland Dental provides non-clinical, administrative support services to 1,400 dentists.

4. In addition to expanding its portfolio of affiliated practices, Heartland Dental opened a non-clinical support hub in Indianapolis last year.

5. Like other DSOs, Heartland Dental got a new investor in 2018. With the investment from KKR, Heartland Dental is continuing its expansion plans.
