The investment DSOs are leaning into

DSOs are increasing the number of educational opportunities available to affiliated doctors as a way to uplift their network and support recruitment efforts.

Several organizations launched continuing education and clinical training programs in recent years with the goal supporting dentists' career development. This year, other DSOs are making business and leadership skills another key focus for affiliates.

Effingham, Ill.-based Heartland Dental recently established Heartland Dental University to provide business and leadership training in addition to clinical education.

Waltham, Mass.-based 42 North Dental most recently announced the launch of its dental implant fellowship in June. It also most recently partnered with the Massachusetts Dental Society to develop a leadership program for its supported dental professionals. The program includes four courses covering empathy, leadership and diversity, equity and inclusion.

Michael Scialabba, DDS, 42 North Dental's chief clinical officer, said leadership skills are part of helping dentists become more well-rounded clinicians, while another exec noted that the DSO saw an increased interest in leadership training among its supported dentists.

"I work closely with our doctors and have heard more and more that they are looking for education that could help them become better overall leaders for the benefit of their practice and patients," said Stephanie Payne, DMD, regional clinical director at 42 North Dental.

The Aspen Group also launched TAG University last month to support providers and staff across its five brands. In addition to clinical care and leadership, the program also provides business and operations training.

Chrissie Leibman, senior vice president of leadership and development at The Aspen Group and Dean of TAG University, said the training compliments what dentists learn in dental school.

"Another important aspect of our provider success is understanding how to operate and run a business on a daily basis," Ms. Leibman said. "How do you manage your schedule in a way that drives an excellent experience for your patients but also keeps you and your team thriving and performing at your peak? How do you think through the business decisions you're making so you're thinking through the short term and long term? How do you want to run your practice as a small business owner?"
