Columbia University names Dr. Dennis Mitchell as dental school dean

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine has appointed Dennis Mitchell, DDS, as its next dean. 

Dr. Mitchell first joined the university’s faculty more than 30 years ago, and has been the dental school’s interim dean since February 2025, according to an Oct. 22 news release from Columbia University. 

Throughout his career, Dr. Mitchell’s academic work has focused on the oral manifestations of HIV, the treatment of periodontal disease and the risk of preterm birth and the oral health needs of underserved populations.

In addition, Dr. Mitchell was named as senior vice president of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the release said.
