Number of oral, maxillofacial surgeries increases: 7 key statistics

Researchers found the monthly average number oral and maxillofacial surgeries performed has increased from 2010 to 2016, according to a Dentistry IQ report that covered data from 12,500 dental practices.

Here is the average annual number of surgeries performed from 2010 to 2016:

1. 2010 – 24.92 surgeries
2. 2011 – 26.25 surgeries
3. 2012 – 26.50 surgeries
4. 2013 – 27.75 surgeries
5. 2014 – 29.50 surgeries
6. 2015 – 30.75 surgeries
7. 2016 – 29.25 surgeries

If a practice does not meet these numbers or wishes to increase its existing average, Roger Levin, DDS, of the Levin Group in Owings Mills, Md., recommends looking at the practice's treatment mix. Practices can benefit from adding on other treatment options and practice management services.
