American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry issues conditional recommendation for silver diamine flouride for dental caries

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry issued updated guidelines for using silver diamine flouride to manage dental caries in children and adolescents.

Here are three things to know:

1. After reviewing various studies on silver diamine flouride, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry supports the use of 38 percent silver diamine fluoride to manage dental caries in children and adolescents.

2. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry made a conditional recommendation finding silver diamine flouride's benefits outweigh the possible undesirable effects. Some of these negative effects include dark discoloration of carious silver diamine flouride-treated dentin.

3. The panel concluded, "A conditional recommendation was merited because, although a majority of patients would benefit from the intervention, individual circumstances, preferences and values need to be assessed by the practitioner after explanation and consultation with the caregiver."
