A newly signed bill in Oklahoma closes a loophole that allows dental insurers to set prices for services they do not cover.
Under Senate Bill 1942, dental insurance plans can no longer force dentists to accept insurer-set fees for services and procedures that are not covered by a patient’s dental plan, according to an April 15 news release from the Oklahoma Senate.
The bill aims to strengthen patient choice by letting dentists and patients to determine the best course of action without interference from insurance companies.
Julie McKone, executive director of Oklahoma Families for Affordable Healthcare, told KOCO News 5 that while the bill may help small business dentists and practice owners, it could also remove protections and price caps for patients.
State Sen. Kristen Thompson said that it is possible prices could increase, but believes dentists will engage with patients to bring costs down.
The law goes into effect Nov. 1.
