Republican-backed budget blueprint could bring major Medicaid cuts: 7 notes for dental leaders

A budget resolution passed by the GOP-led House Budget Committee sets the stage for cuts to several safety net programs, including Medicaid.

Seven notes for dental leaders to know: 

1. The House Budget Committee released its budget blueprint Feb. 12 and voted to advance the resolution to the full House for approval. 

2. The proposal directs House committees to cut spending by at least $1.5 trillion, with the goal of reducing spending by $2 trillion over 10 years, the Associated Press reported Feb. 12. 

3. The Energy and Commerce Committee, which is responsible for matters related to public health and the Department of Health and Human Services, is being asked to cut $880 billion over the course of a decade. 

4. Republicans are also considering adding work requirements for certain individuals as a condition of their Medicaid coverage.

5. Threats to safety net program spending, particularly Medicaid, have led to concerns that the House will not be able to pass the proposal, The Hill reported Feb. 16.

6. The Senate Budget Committee passed its own resolution Feb. 12, prioritizing funds for border security, the military and energy, while measures to curtail cuts to safety net programs were defeated.

7. The American Hospital Association urged Congress to reject cuts to Medicaid Feb. 12.
