Utah expands dental Medicaid coverage for adults

Adults in Utah who are 21 and older are now eligible for dental coverage under Medicaid, the Utah News Dispatch reported April 1.

Previously, those eligible for dental coverage included children, pregnant women, adults undergoing treatment for substance use disorder, people with disabilities and adults 65 and older.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services approved the expanded coverage earlier this year, allowing the estimated 120,000 adult enrollees to gain access to dental services.

The state’s Medicaid program is partnering with the University of Utah School of Dentistry to provide these services.

The university has a network of more than 300 office-based dentists throughout the state in addition to other dental providers who work in school clinics, rural clinics and a mobile clinic. These dentists are offered separate reimbursements in addition to Medicaid reimbursements. They are also offered free continuing education courses.
