How dental hygienists' income stacks up by employment type

Military dental hygienists on average make about $20,000 more annually than mobile clinic dental hygienists, according to a 2022 salary survey by DentalPost released Jan. 11.

DentalPost conducted its 2022 Salary Survey in late July through early September 2021 that included more than 13,000 dental professionals. These results come from dental hygienists who work more than 30 hours a week.

Average income of dental hygienists by employment type:

Military — $79,572
Community clinic — $79,224
Corporate practice — $73,758
Public health — $71,748
Hospital — $71,690
All other — $71,103
General private practice — $68,939
Specialist private practice — $67,868
Public schools — $67,150
Prison — $66,917
University — $64,133
Mobile clinic — $59,333
