Florida lawmakers aim to create dental therapy council: 5 things to know

Newly filed corresponding bills in the Florida House of Representatives and Senate seek to establish a dental therapy council, according to a Jan. 8 report from News 4 JAX.

Here are five things to know about the bills:

1. House Bill 21 and Senate Bill 82 looks to create a “Council on Dental Therapy,” which would be responsible for developing rules and regulations for dental therapy in Florida. 

2. The bills also set continuing education standards for dental therapists in the state.

3. Under the bills, dental therapists would be allowed to administer anesthesia and provide dental services in a mobile unit, as long as they have proper supervision. 

4. In addition, Medicaid would be able to provide reimbursements for dental services that are provided in a dental unit if the unit is part of a “health access setting.”

5. If approved, the bills would go into effect July 1, 2025.
