The West Virginia University School of Dentistry’s inaugural pediatric dentistry residency cohort recently graduated, completing the first and only pediatric dental residency program in the state.
The three residents trained at WVU Dental’s Pediatric Dentistry Clinic and WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s Hospital, gaining experience treating children of various ages, including those with complex medical histories and special healthcare needs, according to an Aug. 24 news release.
The program was developed to address a shortage of pediatric dentists in the state. WVU received accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation for the program in 2023.
The school’s clinic is already receiving high referral volumes from dental offices in West Virginia and neighboring states, according to program director Dami Kim, DDS.
