Why dental assistants are changing jobs

More than half of all dental assistants are currently applying for new jobs or planning to do so before 2026, according to Dentalpost’s 2025 Dental Salary Survey Report.

Dentalpost surveyed 366 dental assistants to create this year’s report. The survey was conducted from October to November 2024. 

Here is when responding dental assistants said they plan to apply to new jobs:

  • No plans: 47%
  • Currently applying for jobs: 19.7%
  • Plan to apply for new jobs within 6 months: 7.1%
  • Plan to apply for new jobs within 12 months: 3.3%
  • Plan to apply for new jobs within one to two years: 1.6% 
  • Plan to apply for new jobs after two years: 2.7%
  • Considering new job opportunities/reading job posting and might apply within the next year: 18.6%

Here are the top motivations for dental assistants searching for a new job:

  • Higher income: 38.3%
  • Better work environment: 24.3%
  • Better benefits: 24%
  • Career opportunity: 17.5%
  • Better location: 16.7%
  • Better hours: 14.5%
