Meriter-UnityPoint Health plans to close dental clinic

Madison, Wis.-based Meriter-UnityPoint Health plans to close Meriter Hospital’s Max W. Pohle Dental Clinic in 2015, and give $1 million to Access Community Health Centers in Madison to expand its dental services, according to a report by The Wisconsin State Journal.

Access plans to hire three more dentists, and patients who receive oral care at Meriter will be able to switch over to Access. The clinic will close by July 2015.

According to Meriter spokewoman Leah Huibregtse, Meriter loses around $600,000 a year through the dental clinic. Nearly all of the loss comes from sedation patients because of low Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement for their surgical services.
