Heartland Dental’s 5-year growth: A timeline

Effingham, Ill.-based Heartland Dental is the largest DSO in the U.S., supporting more than 1,700 practices. Here are 16 of the company’s biggest moves and accomplishments since 2019:

2019

  • The DSO opened a nonclinical support office in St. Louis, its third administrative site.
  • Heartland Dental became the first DSO in the country to support 1,000 total dental practices.

2020

  • Heartland Dental added more than 100 new dentists during 2020.
  • The company acquired Southfield, Mich.-based Tru Family Dental, a regional dental support organization consisting of 10 Illinois offices and 13 Michigan offices.

2021

  • Heartland Dental created an accelerated growth plan, advancing its de novo and single-office affiliations.
  • Heartland Dental hired Stacy DeWalt to serve as chief marketing officer and executive vice president.
  • The DSO completed a strategic transaction with Wakefield, Mass.-based American Dental Partners Incorporated, which has 23 dental group practices across 21 states.
  • Heartland Dental expanded throughout 2021 by adding 424 new practices.

2022

  • Heartland Dental planned to open 107 practices during 2022. 
  • Richard Workman, DMD, founder of Heartland Dental, and his wife, Angela Workman, donated $5 million to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry.
  • Heartland Dental provided support for a merger of three Canadian dental companies to create the largest DSO in the country.
  • Heartland Dental introduced its new brand campaign, Doctor Difference, celebrating its culture and business model.

2023

  • Heartland Dental partnered with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association to offer educational programs and events for students and professionals.
  • The company established Heartland Dental University to provide continuing education opportunities to its affiliated dentists and employees.
  • A case study conducted by Heartland Dental and Bola AI found that practices that implemented Bola AI’s technology saved staff’s time while creating a positive return on investment.
  • Heartland Dental added VideaHealth’s artificial intelligence technology to its more than 1,700-practice network.
