Police confirmed Dec. 19 that Carmen Ramirez, DDS, died one month after being shot in the face, neck and chest. Two men shot the dentist as she walked up the stairs to her practice, police said.

Detectives said Hector Ledesma and Ralph Benjamin shot Dr. Ramirez because she was a victim of identity theft and was going to testify against Mr. Ledesma’s brother, who allegedly took over $40,000 from her practice.

The two men were arrested at the airport days after the shooting. Mr. Ledesma and Mr. Benjamin pleaded not guilty to premeditated murder charges, which could be upgraded to murder.
