The ADA received 19,000 responses when it began conducting the survey during the week of March 23, and new results have been released every other week.

Thirty-eight percent of dentists reported experiencing a patient volume similar to their pre-pandemic level during the week of Nov. 2. Just 1 percent of respondents reported being closed and seeing no patients at all.

The numbers varied moderately by type of dental practice, as 50 percent of DSO-affiliated dentists reported seeing patient volumes lower than their pre-pandemic level, and 61 percent of dentists who are not part of a DSO reported the same. Sixty-four percent of respondents who are the sole practicing dentist at their practice reported experiencing a lower-than-usual patient volume, whereas 56.5 percent of dentists who work at a practice with two to nine dentists reported the same.
