Pacific Dental Services and the American Diabetes Association aim to boost awareness around the link between periodontal disease and diabetes, and how dental providers can help patients prevent and manage the chronic health condition.
People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes, according to the American Academy of Periodontology. Periodontal disease can even be considered a complication of diabetes sometimes.
“Through this partnership with the American Diabetes Association, PDS and its supported practices will have the ability to extend education and awareness of the mouth-body connection even further, and ultimately improve the health of an even greater audience,” said Daniel Burke, chief enterprise strategy officer of Pacific Dental Services.
In recognition of American Diabetes Month in November, PDS-supported practices distributed the latest issue of Generations of Smiles, which focuses on the tie between oral health and diabetes, and includes nutritional information and a diabetes risk test developed by the American Diabetes Association.
Earlier this month, Waltham, Mass.-based 42 North Dental also partnered with the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness among patient communities.
