SmileDirectClub vs. Align Technology: How the clear aligner companies performed in Q3

SmileDirectClub and Align Technology are two dental technology companies that compete in the clear aligner market.

Here is how the companies fared during the third quarter of 2022, according to financial results released since Oct. 26:

SmileDirectClub

SmileDirectClub, based in Nashville, Tenn., had third-quarter revenue of $107 million, a 15.1 percent decrease from the second quarter and a 22.5 percent drop from the third quarter of last year. The company had an average gross sale of $1,902 for its clear aligners and made 52,367 unique aligner shipments in the third quarter, down from the 62,705 it made during the second quarter. SmileDirectClub is projecting its 2022 total revenue to be between $470 million and $500 million.

Align Technology

San Jose, Calif.-based Align Technology reported $890.3 million in total revenue during the third quarter, a decrease of 8.2 percent from the second quarter of 2022. The total is a drop of 12.4 percent from the third quarter of 2021. The company's clear aligners had a revenue of $732.8 million, down 8.2 percent from the second quarter and down 12.5 percent year over year. The company also had a drop in clear aligner volume with a decrease of 3.6 percent from the second quarter.
