Illinois weighs teledentistry bill

Illinois lawmakers are considering a bill that would make changes to the state’s Dental Practice Act to address teledentistry.

Senate Bill 3211 aims to ensure safe and professional standards in teledentistry by clarifying when and how teledentistry may be used. According to the legislation, initial examinations for new patients could be conducted through teledentistry if the authorizing dentists first review the patients’ medical and dental history and verify their identity and physical location to ensure dental care is being administered within the state. It would also require that an initial examination be performed in person for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, as well as before any irreversible treatments.

Among other changes, the bill would also allow dentists to delegate services using teledentistry to hygienists.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
