High Point University dental school developing world's largest simulation lab

High Point (N.C.) University’s Workman School of Dental Medicine is installing SIMtoCARE dental units as part of its goal to create the world's largest simulation lab.

The SIMtoCARE simulation unit uses hand pieces to create a realistic experience for students to practice procedures, including providing fillings or performing root canals. The device's computer provides exact measurements and feedback and records data.

The dental school has installed 10 units and plans to add 10 more by May, according to a March 23 news release.

Only about 20 universities in the world use haptics, according to Ali Shazib, DMD, an associate professor, assistant dean and chief clinical officer of the dental school.

The Workman School of Dental Medicine will begin enrolling students in fall 2024 and will be the state's only private dental school.
