The Department of Justice indicted 60 healthcare workers across the Midwest and Appalachian region on April 17 for their alleged role in forming "pill mills" and illegally prescribing opioids.
Of the 60 charged include 31 physicians, seven pharmacists, eight nurse practitioners, one dentist and six other licensed medical professions.
The Kentucky dentist is accused of healthcare fraud and participating in a controlled substance scheme. Federal prosecutors charged the dentist for his alleged conduct that included writing prescriptions that were not medically necessary. The dentist also allegedly wrote prescriptions outside the scope of his practice.
Federal prosecutors also claim the dentist would remove teeth unnecessarily, schedule unnecessary follow-up appointments and bill insurers inappropriately for services.
