SmileDirectClub faces mounting pushback from dental industry

Over the past two years, SmileDirectClub has gained momentum and criticism, according to Bloomberg. Although the teeth-straightening company has a partnership with CVS, it is facing backlash from various dental associations.

To date, consumers who have used SmileDirectClub aligners have filed around 1,050 complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Many of the complaints describe broken and loose teeth as well as misaligned bites, Bloomberg reports.

Beyond patient complaints, the American Dental Association and American Association of Orthodontists have lodged complaints with the FDA. However, the FDA has yet to take action.

Throughout the country, state dental boards regulate dentistry. The American Association of Orthodontists has filed formal complaints in 36 states, demanding dental boards enforce laws against practicing dentistry without a license, Bloomberg reports.

Dental boards in Georgia and Alabama are seeking to forbid SmileDirectClub from scanning patients' teeth without a dentist physically present. SmileDirectClub is fighting back, claiming the dental boards are violating the company's rights.
