Illinois dental society warns of new phone scam

The Illinois State Dental Society is warning of an ongoing phone scam targeting dental practices.

The organization said in a June 15 news release that scammers are targeting dentists by calling from a number that appears to be from the Illinois State Dental Society, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation or the Drug Enforcement Agency. The phone calls may come from live people, robocalls or text messages in an attempt to gain money or personal information. Dentists may be presented with information that seems accurate, such as dental license numbers; however, the ISDS said such information is publicly available online, so dentists should not be alarmed.

The ISDS recommended dentists report the scam calls or texts to the Federal Trade Commission, which can help gather evidence for lawsuits against scammers.
