California dental practices may be required to make violence prevention plans

Some California dental practices will be required to create, implement and maintain a workplace violence protection plan by July 1.

Practices that have more than 10 employees and are open to the public are subject to Senate Bill 553, which was signed into law in September, according to a May 1 news release from the California Dental Association.

The plans must contain information and procedures related to preventing and responding to violent incidents. Employees will participate in the development of the plan.

Each practice must review its plan annually or sooner if there is an incident of violence or if there is a deficiency in the plan, the release said.
