Cure Dental in Belton, Texas, recently suffered a data breach affecting more than 800 patients.
The practice said on its website that it detected unauthorized cyber activity on June 25 that potentially compromised the personal information of up to 878 current and former patients. An investigation revealed that the practice’s cybersecurity platform detected and stopped movement of malicious activity across its network.
Data that may have been compromised in the breach includes names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers. The practice clarified that the incident did not affect any patient protected health information.
The practice added that following the breach, the threat actor contacted the office several times demanding that staff manually activate malware files left on its system but discontinued his efforts after staff members did not comply. A patient also reported that they were contacted by someone posing as an IT professional.
