How to tell if embezzlement is occurring at your practice: 6 red flags

William Hiltz is a professional investigator for fraud committed against general dentists and specialists, and claims he has the ability to determine the likelihood of fraud by simply asking a few questions.

In an article for The Profitable Dentist, Mr. Hiltz listed what would be considered red flag behaviors that could mean fraud.

1. An employee with known financial issues.

2. Employees who spend lots of time alone in the office after hours.

3. Employees who come to work when visibly ill or refuse to take vacation.

4. An employee who is jumpy, territorial, or resistant to change and/or training others. Embezzlers want consistency in practice management software and accounting.

5. Employees who respond to information requests slowly.

6. An employee who portrays themselves as ideal or loyal.
