University of Detroit Mercy has a mobile dental coach providing dental care for students at schools across Wayne County, according to Crain's Detroit Business.
Here are five key points:
1. The Delta Dental Foundation funded the mobile coach and four portable dental chairs for a total of $584,907.
2. The coach has four treatment chairs, portable X-ray units, a sterilization unit as well as a digital imaging system.
3. For two weeks, UDM dental students and faculty expect to treat more than 50 students at Noble Elementary-Middle School.
4. Dental students and faculty will administer services including dental exams, sealants, X-rays, cleanings, restorative care, extractions, mouth guard, oral health education and emergency services.
5. Wayne County is one of three counties in Michigan that has failed to provide dental care to children under the state's Healthy Kids Dental Medicaid program. Starting Oct. 1, the program will extend dental care to children up to 12 years old in Wayne County.
