NYU College of Dentistry receives $13M research funding award: 5 insights

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute granted NYU College of Dentistry in New York City a $13 million funding award.

1. With the funding, NYU College of Dentistry dentists and researchers will study cavity prevention, quality of life and school performance.

2. Richard Niederman, DMD, and Ryan Richard Ruff, PhD, will lead the five-year study, comparing the effectiveness of two cavity prevention techniques.

3. The study will be conducted in Bronx, N.Y., an area lacking dental care providers and clinics.

4. Drs. Neiderman and Ruff are also partnering with the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing and NYU dental hygienists to compare care delivered by nurses and dental hygienists.

5. This study was selected through the Pragmatic Clinical Studies Initiative, which test a treatment's effectiveness in real life practice situations.
