Legislation introduced for paid vacation, 32-hour workweek: 7 notes for dentists

Sen. Bernie Sanders recently introduced two pieces of legislation that would guarantee paid vacation and establish a 32-hour workweek for U.S. employees.

Here are seven things to know about the bills:

Guaranteed Paid Vacation Act

1. This bill would ensure that all U.S. employees have a right to accrue no less than one hour of paid annual leave for every 25 hours worked.

2. Full-time employees would also earn no less than two weeks of paid annual leave per year at the employees' standard rate of pay, according to a March 22 news release. This leave would also be added to any paid sick leave or family and medical leave.

3. The bill would prohibit discrimination against any employee for exercising their right to use their paid time off.

4. Companion legislation was also introduced in the House by Rep. Seth Magaziner.

Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act

1. The bill would establish a standard 32-hour workweek in the U.S. with no loss in pay.

2. Legislation to implement a 32-hour workweek was reintroduced last year after being introduced for the first time in 2021.

3. Rep. Mark Takano introduced companion legislation in the House.
