Connecticut dentist to pay $300K settlement for fraudulent billing, uncertified assistants performing X-rays

A Connecticut dentist must pay a $300,000 settlement after allegedly overbilling for services and allowing uncertified dental assistants to perform procedures they were not qualified to do, according to an Oct. 1 news release from the state's attorney general.

Abbas Mohammadi, DDS, owner and operator of Manchester, Conn.-based Columbia Dental and Columbia Oral Maxillofacial Imaging, is accused of repeatedly overcharging the Connecticut Medical Assistance Program for dental fillings that were either never performed or were not necessary.

An investigation reportedly found evidence of dental X-rays taken by dental assistants who were not certified by the Dental Assisting National Board. From Jan. 1, 2014, to Nov. 30, 2015, Columbia Dental routinely submitted claims for payment to the CMAP for X-rays taken by dental assistants who were not certified to do so.
