The Lake County (Ill.) State’s Attorney’s Office and the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation are investigating a patient's death after being treated at Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of Lake County in Gurnee, Ill.
Corey Causey, 51, was undergoing dental surgery at the practice June 9 when he went into cardiac arrest; he was taken to a hospital where he died the next day, the Lake & McHenry County Scanner reported July 20.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said Aaron Cwik, DDS, gave the patient too much anesthesia when he administered a single dose of 200 milligrams of propofol. Ms. Banek said Mr. Causey's comorbidities put him at a higher anesthetic risk, according to the report.
Ms. Banek also said Dr. Cwik did not set up the necessary monitoring devices or provide the patient supplemental oxygen. A specialist should have also been present to administer the anesthesia so the dentist was not doing both jobs, Banek told the Scanner.
A spokesperson for the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office declined to give the Lake & McHenry County Scanner a comment on the case.
