Minnesota dentist who closed his practice denied license reinstatement

Marko Kamel, DDS, owner of a dental clinic in Minnesota that abruptly closed, was denied reinstatement of his dental license by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry.

Woodbury Dental Arts closed suddenly in March after Dr. Kamel ran out of money to continue running the practice. Patients said that they are still waiting for answers from Dr. Kamel and his lawyer on the closure.

In his petition to the board. Dr. Kamel said that because of his suspension, patients have had their care disrupted, as many are undergoing treatment that is completed in multiple stages. Reinstating his license is important to "ensure continuity of patient care and complete work that was started," Dr. Kamel said.

The committee said the claim was not a valid reason to reinstate Dr. Kamel's license because patients can seek care from other dental providers, and, based on deficiencies of the practice, "Licensee's immediate return to practice would not serve the patients' best interests," the board said.

In its decision, the board claimed that Dr. Kamel did not identify a basis in statute or rule that would give the board reason to grant reconsideration and reinstatement of his license.
