State lawmakers have introduced several pieces of legislation aimed at enhancing accountability and transparency for dental insurers.
Six updates:
1. The Nevada Commissioner of Insurance adopted new regulations requiring insurers to file an annual report on or before May 1 that covers all losses incurred and all premiums earned for the previous calendar year.
2. The Idaho Legislature introduced a bill that would require dental healthcare service plans to report their dental loss ratios.
3. The Colorado House Health and Human Services Committee passed legislation requiring insurance carriers to obtain dental providers’ consent before renting out their services.
4. Lawmakers in Mississippi are considering a bill requiring dental insurance carriers to calculate dental loss ratios.
5. Two Alabama bills, HB 212 and SB 81, would require at least 75% of individual plan premiums and 83% of group plan premiums to be used on patient care, rather than administrative costs.
6. West Virginia’s More for Your Smile bill would require dental insurers to allocate at least 85% of premium dollars on patient care.
