Dentistry's private equity boom in 2022

Private equity-backed dental groups and firms have been active this year acquiring practices, making investments and launching new deals. 

Here are more than 20 deals that have taken place this year:

  • River Edge, N.J.-based Riverside Oral Surgery received investments from private equity firms MedEquity Capital and RF Investment Partners in November.
  • Private equity-backed DSO Great Lakes Dental Partners added its third Indiana practice in October.
  • Private equity firm SkyKnight Capital invested in Pearl Street Dental Partners, a dental practice management company, in October.
  • Private equity-backed DSO Phase 1 Equity launched in September and appointed Kristen Cusack CEO in October.
  • BlackRock Long Term Private Capital acquired a majority interest in Lincoln, Neb.-based Paradigm Oral Health. 
  • Specialty Dental Brands, which was founded by private equity firm Leon Capital, finalized its growth partnership deal with private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners in September. 
  • Private-equity-backed DSO Oakpoint added Garris Dental Care, a three-location dental practice in South Carolina, to its network and acquired the nonclinical assets of Wendell (N.C.) Family Dentistry. In May, the group added endodontic services to its roster through partnerships with two practices.
  • Private-equity-backed DSO Signet Leadership acquired Logansport, Ind.-based Dill Family Dentistry.  
  • Thurston Group, a private equity firm whose focuses include dental and healthcare investments, closed 65 deals in the first half of 2022. 
  • Madison, Wis.-based DSO First Choice Dental landed a private equity investment from an affiliate of the Beekman Group.
  • West Coast Dental received an investment from private equity firm Court Square Capital Partners.
  • West Sacramento, Calif.-based DSO Ideal Dental Management Partners received a private equity investment from ONCAP Partners.
  • Private equity firm Shore Capital Partners founded OMS360, an oral surgeon support organization, in February. It affiliated with Texas Oral Surgery Group, its first practice in the state, in June. 
  • Dental software company Planet DDS entered an agreement in June to be recapitalized by private equity firms Aquiline Capital Partners and Level Equity Management. 
  • Private-equity-backed Bond Orthodontic Partners launched a platform in May to provide its network practices with support resources. 
  • Private-equity-backed DSO Today's Dental Network added its second oral surgery partner in April. It also expanded its pediatric services by partnering with Sarasota, Fla.-based SmileWorks Kids Dentistry.
  • Eau Claire​, Wis.-based Simko Specialty Dental and private equity firm Blue Sea Capital entered a strategic partnership in April to form management services organization Specialty Smile Partners.
  • Private-equity-backed DSO Cordental Group acquired Gateway Dental Group in Des Moines, Iowa, and the practice of Barry Liebman, DDS, in St. Louis. 
  • The Rise Fund, an investment company of private equity firm TPG, acquired Blue Cloud Pediatric Surgery Centers, which operates 15 pediatric dental ASCs across six states.
  • Dental electronic data interchange company DentalXChange received a strategic investment from Bregal Sagemount private equity firm.
  • Private-equity-backed Community Dental Partners received a senior credit facility from White Oak Healthcare Finance.
  • An affiliate of private equity firm Beekman Investment Partners IV acquired P&R Dental Strategies in January. 
  • Georgetown, Texas-based DSO Smile Doctors gained an investment from private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners.
