This year, dental companies and organizations named new CEOs, directors, vice presidents and more.
Here are 114 leadership moves from 2021:
- Lawrence Tabak, DDS, PhD, was named acting director of the National Institutes of Health.
- The Chicago Dental Society installed Michael Durbin, DDS, as president-elect.
- The University at Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine appointed Stefan Ruhl, DDS, interim dean.
- Kyle Wailes recently announced he will step down as SmileDirectClub's CFO in March 2022.
- SmileDirectClub named Brett Deaver senior vice president and general manager of its global partner network. It also appointed Ted Ward as a director on its board.
- Delta Dental of Tennessee promoted its CFO Jeff Ballard to executive vice president. It also named Melissa Huschke COO and Shanda Brown as chief diversity officer.
- Duane Douglas, DMD, was named interim dean at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in Alton.
- Ronald Sakaguchi, DDS, PhD, was appointed dean at Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry in Portland.
- Cataldo Leone, DMD, was named dean of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine.
- George Bruder, DMD, was appointed chief research and strategies officer of Pittsburgh-based DSO North American Dental Group.
- The American Orthodontic Society elected Brian Vierthaler, DDS, as its next president.
- Orange, Calif.-based Western Dental appointed Paul Holt as executive vice president and CFO; Vivek Kumar as chief credit officer; Eric Royal as chief compliance officer; and Keith Kooman as vice president of financial planning and analysis.
- Dental software company Tab32 named Erin Norris, Jim Smit and Paul Blocchi as directors of strategic accounts. In October, it promoted Melissa LuVisi to chief strategy officer. In July, the company added three dental leaders to its advisory board: Emmet Scott, president of the Association of Dental Support Organizations; Roshan Parikh, DDS, Walmart's former head of dentistry; and Visio co-founder Ellen Polsky, DDS.
- Belangie Perez-Torres was elected vice president for professional development of the New York Dental Hygienists' Association.
- Sarasota, Fla.-based Dental Care Alliance appointed William Mauthe III, DDS, as dental director and Bernard Bolka as market vice president.
- Wayne Aldredge, DMD, Sheri Doniger, DDS, Emily Boge and Paul Goodman, DMD, were added as members of vTail's clinical advisory board to support the healthcare communication app's dental channel.
- Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Imagen Dental Partners appointed Michael Unton COO. It also added Shivi Gupta, DMD, and Tony Hatch, DDS, as clinical leaders for its California practices.
- Joseph Zambon, DDS, PhD, dean of the University at Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine, announced that he will retire Jan. 5 after 39 years with the school.
- The American Dental Association's Business Innovation Group appointed Tim Steffl its new president and CEO.
- Wardah Inam, PhD, CEO of dental artificial intelligence company Overjet, was added as a member of oral health nonprofit the Santa Fe Group's Strategic Advisory Council.
- The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons named 12 dentists as trustees and officers.
- The University of Texas Health San Antonio School of Dentistry appointed Micaela Gibbs, DDS, its first chief dental officer.
- Dental technology company Keystone Dental Holdings appointed Mark Neri senior vice president of international sales.
- The American Association of Dental Boards named nine dentists to its board of directors.
- The Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners installed Matthew McDonough, DDS, as its next president.
- Burlington, Vt.-based orthodontics company StarAligners selected Reid Greenberg as its CEO.
- Chicago-based DSO Elite Dental Partners appointed Sarah Berman vice president of general counsel. It also named Amy Stadtherr its director of dental implants and surgery.
- The American Dental Association installed Cesar Sabates, DDS, as its newest president and named George Shepley, DDS, its president-elect. The organization added Elizabeth Shapiro, DDS, as chief of governance and strategy management. In October, Raymond Cohlmia, DDS, joined the ADA as executive director.
- Ten dental professionals were selected to be a part of Nashville, Tenn.-based DSO Marquee Dental Partners' dental advisory board.
- The Delta Dental Plans Association hired Michael Schwartz to be its chief strategic collaboration officer.
- Eight dentists were appointed as officers and trustees of the Minnesota Dental Association.
- Waltham, Mass.-based DSO 42 North Dental tapped David Lustbader, DMD, to be its director of clinical affairs and Sharon Korzan as chief development officer. In September, the DSO appointed Diane Vaccaro as chief marketing officer and Thomas Brouillard as CFO. In May, it selected former CVS Health executive Johnny Khouri as its new COO.
- California-based dentist Randall Elloway, DDS, was named a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology.
- Penn Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia named Bruce Brandolin, DDS, assistant dean of intramural practice and external partnerships. It also named Michael Glick, DMD, director of its new Center for Integrative Global Oral Health.
- South Carolina-based dentist Martin Steed, DDS, was added to the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery board of directors.
- North Carolina-based dentist Gregory Chadwick, DDS, was named president-select of the FDI World Dental Federation.
- Stephen Dargan, DDS, was named president of the Maryland State Dental Association.
- Graham Stanley, former CFO of Henry Schein's global dental group, was selected to be the dental and medical office supplier's vice president of investor relations and strategic financial project officer.
- Joseph Fox and Michael Gans were named vice presidents of business development for Carrollton, Texas-based dental partnership organization MB2 Dental.
- Fred Leviton, president and CEO of Dental Lifeline Network, will retire at the end of 2021.
- Nicole Kimmes, DDS, was named interim dean of the University of New England College of Dental Medicine in Portland, Maine.
- CMS appointed Natalia Chalmers, DDS, PhD, as its first chief dental officer.
