This year, dental companies and organizations named new CEOs, directors, vice presidents and more.

Here are 114 leadership moves from 2021:

  • Lawrence Tabak, DDS, PhD, was named acting director of the National Institutes of Health.
  • The Chicago Dental Society installed Michael Durbin, DDS, as president-elect.
  • The University at Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine appointed Stefan Ruhl, DDS, interim dean.
  • Kyle Wailes recently announced he will step down as SmileDirectClub's CFO in March 2022.
  • SmileDirectClub named Brett Deaver senior vice president and general manager of its global partner network. It also appointed Ted Ward as a director on its board.
  • Delta Dental of Tennessee promoted its CFO Jeff Ballard to executive vice president. It also named Melissa Huschke COO and Shanda Brown as chief diversity officer.
  • Duane Douglas, DMD, was named interim dean at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in Alton.
  • Ronald Sakaguchi, DDS, PhD, was appointed dean at Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry in Portland.
  • Cataldo Leone, DMD, was named dean of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

In July, the company added three dental leaders to its advisory board: Emmet Scott, president of the Association of Dental Support Organizations; Roshan Parikh, DDS, Walmart's former head of dentistry; and Visio co-founder Ellen Polsky, DDS.
  • Belangie Perez-Torres was elected vice president for professional development of the New York Dental Hygienists' Association.
  • Sarasota, Fla.-based Dental Care Alliance appointed William Mauthe III, DDS, as dental director and Bernard Bolka as market vice president.
  • Wayne Aldredge, DMD, Sheri Doniger, DDS, Emily Boge and Paul Goodman, DMD, were added as members of vTail's clinical advisory board to support the healthcare communication app's dental channel.
  • Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Imagen Dental Partners appointed Michael Unton COO. It also added Shivi Gupta, DMD, and Tony Hatch, DDS, as clinical leaders for its California practices.
  • Joseph Zambon, DDS, PhD, dean of the University at Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine, announced that he will retire Jan. 5 after 39 years with the school.
  • The American Dental Association's Business Innovation Group appointed Tim Steffl its new president and CEO.
  • Wardah Inam, PhD, CEO of dental artificial intelligence company Overjet, was added as a member of oral health nonprofit the Santa Fe Group's Strategic Advisory Council.

  • The Delta Dental Plans Association hired Michael Schwartz to be its chief strategic collaboration officer.
